CHANDIGARH: On persistent demand of parents, the Punjab government has decided to reopen all government, semi-government and private schools from January 7 onwards.
The schools will open for five hours a day from 10am to 3pm for students of Class V to XII and no student of any other class will be called to schools. The government in October had allowed opening of schools for Class IX to XII.
Punjab school education minister Vijay Inder Singla said that chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh has directed to ensure safety of the children amid Covid-19 pandemic. He added that following the directions of the CM, all school managements have been asked to strictly comply with the instructions of the government.
The cabinet minister informed that the education department had taken feedback from the school heads, who had suggested the department to reopen the schools before the annual exams for final revision of the students.
As per the standard operating procedures, there must be at least 6 feet distance between students and schools have been advised to mark the seats that students have to occupy. To ensure that proper distance is maintained, only one student will be allowed to sit on a bench, while other protocols like using sanitizers and wearing masks will be followed strictly. Sanitization of school transportation on a regular basis at least twice a day – once before children board the transport and once after has been made mandatory. A minimum physical distance of 6 feet should be maintained during seating.
School managements have been asked to ensure proper cleaning and sanitation facilities in the schools.
Arrangements must be made for cleaning and disinfecting all areas, furniture, equipment, stationery, storage places, water tanks, kitchens, canteens, washrooms, libraries on the school campus. Each school has been asked to ensure availability of key supplies like infrared digital thermometers, disinfectants and soaps.
