The elections to 118 civic bodies in Punjab are likely to be held on February 20, sources in the government said, though a formal notification of the election date and schedule would be issued by the State Election Commission (SEC).

Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh is learnt to have given his approval to conduct the polls way back in October, which would be communicated to the SEC for necessary action, sources said.

Earlier, the government had written to the SEC to conduct the polls by February 13. The Local Government Department had, however, in its communication to the Chief Minister’s Office, sought another 10 days beyond February 13 to conduct the elections. The deputy commissioners too had sought more time.

A senior Congress leader said with the BJP writing to the Punjab Governor to postpone the civic body polls citing law and order situation, it had become all the more important to go in for early polling to prove the saffron party “wrong”.

The Chief Minister has already stated that the BJP was trying to make a “frivolous excuse” of the law and order situation as it was trying to divert attention from the farmers’ agitation.

“With almost four years of good governance and the General Election due in 2022, the civic body polls will be a litmus test for the Congress government in urban areas and the right time to take on the BJP,” said the leader.
